Making a Real Difference –
Our Community Projects

At AFCA, we are constantly developing meaningful projects to improve the lives of our members. From social initiatives to welfare support, each project is designed to bring people together, reduce isolation, and celebrate the strength of our Armed Forces community.

Disability-Accessible Van

Launching on 29th March 2025, our new disability-accessible van will provide essential transport for those who are lonely, isolated, or disabled. This vital service will ensure that everyone — regardless of mobility challenges — can attend medical appointments, social gatherings, and visit loved ones with ease.

Coffee Trailer Project

Our upcoming Coffee Trailer will be a mobile hub for social connection. By travelling to AFCA events and community gatherings, it will provide a warm space where members can enjoy a drink, connect with friends, and build stronger bonds.

Wellbeing and Welfare Support Group

Our dedicated team of volunteers ensures that no one in our community feels forgotten. This group offers:

• Weekly or fortnightly phone calls to check on vulnerable, elderly, or isolated members.

• Delivery of small care packages with essentials or uplifting treats.

• Referrals to trusted local services if members require additional support.

British Legion Partnership Programme

By partnering with the British Legion, we strengthen support for veterans. Together we organise:

• Joint remembrance events like wreath-laying ceremonies.

• Social activities such as afternoon teas, quiz nights, and storytelling sessions.

• Fundraising campaigns to support veterans in need.

Digital Inclusion Programme

Ensuring our members stay connected is vital. Through this project, we provide:

• Workshops on video calling, social media, and online shopping.

• ‘Digital Buddies’ — volunteers who offer one-on-one support.

• Loaned devices such as tablets or laptops to help members engage with online content.

Friendship Walks

We welcome local businesses, organisations, and clubs to partner with us. Opportunities include:

💼 Event Sponsorship — Gain visibility while supporting a great cause.
🤝 Charity of the Year Partnerships — Align your organisation with AFCA's mission.
🎯 Team Fundraising Challenges — Encourage teamwork while raising vital funds.

Memory Lane Project

  • This heartwarming project gives members a chance to share their life stories, experiences, and memories of military service. Activities include:
  • Interviews with members to capture and preserve their stories.
  • A ‘Memory Lane Booklet’ or podcast series to document these precious memories.
  • Storytelling evenings to foster social connections and celebrate past experiences.

Seasonal Care Packages

  • We deliver thoughtful packages to members during Christmas, Easter, and other key holidays. These packages include:
  • Handmade cards from local schools.
  • Warm socks, sweet treats, and uplifting messages.
  • Personalised visits to isolated members to spread cheer and brighten their day.

Gardening Club

  • Our Gardening Club promotes outdoor activity and socialising through:
  • Developing a shared community garden with flowers, vegetables, and herbs.
  • A ‘Grow at Home’ initiative, delivering starter kits to members unable to leave home.
  • Fun competitions such as ‘Best Bloom’ and ‘Best Veg Patch’.

‘Adopt a Veteran’ Scheme

  • Our ‘Adopt a Veteran’ programme pairs isolated veterans with caring volunteers who provide companionship and regular visits. We:
  • Train volunteers to ensure they provide meaningful support.
  • Encourage veterans to share skills, stories, and hobbies with their volunteers.

Local Skills Exchange

  • We believe everyone has something valuable to offer. Our Skills Exchange Programme encourages members to:
  • Share skills like woodworking, sewing, or baking with others.
  • Join skills workshops to learn new crafts or hobbies.
  • Use our Community Skills Board to offer and request skills.

Emergency Response Network

  • Our volunteers are always ready to support those in need. This network offers:
  • Transport assistance, food delivery, and welfare checks during severe weather or health crises.
  • Volunteers trained in basic first aid and mental health support.

AFCA Champions Programme

  • We are building a network of AFCA Champions — local ambassadors who promote our activities and provide guidance to new members. AFCA Champions will:
  • Receive training to become confident advocates for AFCA.
  • Coordinate local meetups and strengthen connections within their community.

Veterans’ Skills Showcase

  • We celebrate the talents and achievements of our veterans through special events, where they can demonstrate skills such as:
  • Woodworking and craft displays.
  • Cooking workshops to teach cherished recipes.
  • Storytelling sessions to inspire younger generations.
